Fifteen days into the 2024 storm season, NOAA has announced it will revise storm names to be more inclusive. The move comes amid mounting pressure by the federal Department of Inclusion and Equity (DIE) to meet new social responsibility standards. According to NOAA, the new storm name list will meet these minimum criteria. At least 50% of the names will be gender nonconforming. Another 50% will represent at least five culturally significant marginalized ethnic groups. Another 70% will be representative of the LgBTQIA+n community. And the final criteria is that “a sequence of names likely to occur at the peak of the season be named after the most destructive force known to nature: straight white males.“
